Winnipeg records 17th homicide after man stabbed on a bus

Winnipeg Police say that a homicide victim flagged down officers near Colony Street and Ellice Avenue before collapsing to the ground on Sunday afternoon, May 24, 2020.

The victim had been stabbed on a Winnipeg Transit bus moments before. Officers immediately rendered first-aid and board the bus. A suspect was taken into custody.

The victim, 57-year-old Raymond Wesley Hill, was transported to hospital by paramedics in critical condition. He did not survive his injuries and was pronounced dead.

Investigators say that they believe the suspect and victim had boarded the bus at a nearby stop. As the bus continued on its route the suspect started an unprovoked altercation with the victim. The altercation escalated quickly and the suspect pulled out a knife and stabbed Hill.

The bus stopped and Hill got off flagging down a WPS patrol unit before collapsing to the ground.

Police say that it does not appear that the two men knew each other before the incident.

46-year-old Justin Gabriel James from Winnipeg has been charged for his alleged involvement with Manslaughter.

James was detained in custody.

Police are looking to speak with a passenger who witnessed the altercation but left before speaking with officers. If you are that passenger you are asked to contact the Homicide Unit at 204-986-6508.
