A routine traffic stop for seatbelt infractions early Sunday morning escalated into the seizure of a loaded improvised firearm and the arrest of three individuals, according to the Winnipeg Police Service.
On February 25, 2024, at approximately 12:23 a.m., North District General Patrol officers pulled over a taxi cab in the 400 block of Selkirk Avenue after observing multiple passengers without seatbelts.
During the identification process, officers discovered that one male was breaching curfew conditions and another had an outstanding arrest warrant. As officers removed the men from the vehicle, a firearm part was spotted in plain view.
Upon further inspection, the part was identified as a loaded improvised firearm, commonly known as a zip gun, containing a chambered .22 calibre round. Officers secured the firearm and seized it as evidence.
As a result of the investigation, a 25-year-old Winnipeg man faces multiple charges, including two counts of Possession of Firearm, Restricted/Prohibited Weapon, Firearm Part or Ammunition Contrary to Prohibition Order, Possession of a Weapon, two counts of Fail to Comply with Condition Order, and a warrant for Fail to Comply with Probation Order.
A 33-year-old Winnipeg man faces similar charges, including two counts of Possession of Firearm, Restricted/Prohibited Weapon, Firearm Part or Ammunition Contrary to Prohibition Order, Possession of a Weapon, and three counts of Fail to Comply with Condition of Release Order.
Both men were detained in custody.
A 27-year-old Winnipeg woman was also arrested and charged with Possession of a Weapon. She was released on an Undertaking as mandated by the Criminal Code.
