UPDATED
Winnipeg Police Service is investigating a serious collision between a Police supervisor SUV and car on Sunday evening, December 20, 2020.
The collision occurred around 9:00 pm in the intersection of Bairdmore Boulevard and Pembina Highway.
Police say that “As the cruiser car entered the intersection, a second vehicle travelling northbound on Pembina attempted to make a left hand turn onto Bairdmore Boulevard.”
Both vehicles sustained significant damage to their front ends.
The driver of the police SUV and the driver of the car were both taken to hospital. The officer was treated and released. The 52-year-old male driver of the other vehicle was taken to hospital in unstable condition but has since been upgraded to stable. He suffered a fractured pelvis and a broken back.
At the time of the collision, road conditions were poor and it was snowing quite heavily.
Witnesses say that a third vehicle was being chased by police at the time of the collision and may have been involved in the crash before fleeing the scene. News 4 has reached out to Winnipeg Police but have yet to hear back.
Southbound Pembina Highway was closed from Newdale Avenue to the Perimeter Highway as members of the Traffic Unit investigated. Police also had the inside lane of northbound Pembina Highway closed
Police took to social media shortly after the crash asking people to avoid the area.
The Independent Investigation Unit of Manitoba has been contacted by the Winnipeg Police Service and will be investigating the incident due to the nature of the injuries sustained in the collision.
