A Winnipeg Police Service Street Supervisor was assaulted while conducting a routine traffic stop on Monday evening, June 2, 2021.
Police say the officer was out of his vehicle the he was approached by a male not involved in the traffic stop demanding to know why the officer had stopped the vehicle. When the officer asked the male to move to the sidewalk the male became aggressive and began yelling and swearing at the officer. The male then tried to grab the driver’s licence from the the officer and became physically aggressive with the officer when he was ordered to step back.
As more officers arrived on the scene the male directed his aggression toward them. A taser was deployed and the male was taken into custody.
Johnathon Mark Couture, 32 from Winnipeg has been charged for his alleged involvement with Assault Peace Officer.
Police say that meth appears to have been a contributing factor in the incident.
