Winnipeg Police Subdue Intoxicated Man After Assault on Officers

On May 5, 2024, Winnipeg Police were called to a residence on Boyd Avenue to address a domestic disturbance involving an intoxicated man. The situation quickly escalated when the man, engaged in a physical altercation with a family member, turned his aggression towards the responding officers.

The North District General Patrol officers found themselves in a violent struggle as the man, in a highly agitated state, assaulted them, managed to disarm an officer of a Taser, and bit two officers. Despite his threats to the officers’ lives, they successfully subdued and arrested him.

The man, identified as 18-year-old Haidyn Bingley Blackbird, was taken to the hospital for sedation due to his intoxication from various substances. After being medically cleared, he faced multiple charges, including three counts of assaulting a peace officer, disarming a peace officer, and uttering threats.

This incident left three officers injured, two of whom required hospital treatment but were later released. Blackbird remains in custody.
