Winnipeg Police cruiser stolen while officers making stolen vehicle arrest

Winnipeg Police were searching for one of their own vehicles Monday night in what could be described as a deja vu moment after a suspect drove off with it.

This is the second time a Winnipeg Police Patrol unit has been stolen within the last month while officers were on the scene of a call.

Police say the incident occurred just before 9:00 pm on July 15, 2019. Officers noticed a stolen vehicle in the area of Watt Street and Munroe Avenue.

As the stolen vehicle came to a dead-end lot a marked patrol unit pulled in behind it. The driver of the stolen car drove the vehicle directly at the cruiser.

Officers responded to the imminent threat by firing their weapons at the vehicle. The vehicle continued and slammed into the police patrol unit and then took off.

The driver didn’t make it very far before he crashed into a building near Watt and Larsen. Police had to use a taser to subdue the suspect in the vehicle and place them under arrest.

While the arrest was underway a second suspect, that police had not seen, made it to the police cruiser and drove off with it.

Police say the vehicle was recovered shortly afterwards after it had driven through Elmwood. It was found near Harbison Avenue and Glenwood Crescent abandoned.

The male suspect who stole the police vehicle got away and has yet to be arrested.
