Winnipeg Police officers cleared in IIU investigation

The Independent Investigation Unit of Manitoba (IIU) has completed its investigation into the death of a 42-year-old male following a run in with Winnipeg Police on August 2, 2019.

Officers had been called to a domestic incident in the 800 block of Consol Avenue in Elmwood around 12:37 am. Investigators say that a male fled from the home and police pursued him on foot for about a block. During the arrest the suspect was uncooperative with police and a taser was deployed.

Soon after being restrained the male became unresponsive. He was taken to St. Boniface Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

The IIU was called in to investigate the incident since it involved a fatality.

After a lengthy investigation that involved interviews with civilians and member of the Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service along with a review WPS reports, call history, forensic reports and photographs, air-1 video and data from the conductive Energy Weapons (Taser) it was determined that there was not sufficient evidence to support that “any of the police officer’s actions, or inactions did anything to transgress the limits of care prescribed by the criminal law in the circumstances of this case.”
