Winnipeg Police officer facing charges for driving carelessly

A Winnipeg Police officer is facing charges under the Highway Traffic Act after they allegedly hit a police officer and a suspect with a patrol unit in May 2021.

On Saturday, May 15, 2021, WPS officers were trying to arrest a male who was a passenger in a stopped taxi when the suspect fled on foot. Officers pursued the suspect on foot when a short time later the suspect and the two officers were hit by a Winnipeg police patrol unit being driven by another officer.

One of the officers suffered a broken pelvis while the suspect was treated in hospital for internal injuries and lacerations.

As broken bones and internal injuries are considered serious injuries the IIU was mandated to investigate.

As a result of the investigation the officer driving the patrol unit was issued a summons for driving carelessly. The officer is scheduled to appear in court in November.
