The Independent Investigation Unit of Manitoba (IIU) has laid charges against a Winnipeg Police Service (WPS) officer after an investigation that began in February 2019.
The IIU began investigating Cst Elmer Hanson after a complaint was made to the WPS from Manulife Financial. Hanson was on long-term disability and was allegedly operating a private business which he did not disclose to Manulife as required.
The WPS notified the IIU of the allegation and it was determined it was in the public interest for the IIU to investigate.
The investigation determined that there are reasonable grounds to believe a criminal offence occurred.
Hanson was charged with Fraud over $5,000 and will appear in court in July of 2020.
