Winnipeg Police Officer Assaulted During Grocery Store Incident

On the evening of July 27, 2024, a routine patrol by the Winnipeg Police Service’s Property Crime Unit took a dramatic turn in the Osborne Village neighbourhood. At approximately 7:20 p.m., officers were conducting proactive duties as part of the Violent Crime Retail Theft Initiative when they encountered a disturbance at a grocery store in the 400 block of River Avenue.

An officer approached an adult female suspect causing a commotion inside the store. When asked to leave the premises, the suspect, identified as Brittany Anne Marie McKAY, threatened to kill the officer and charged at them. McKAY then armed herself with a canister of insect/pest control and sprayed it at the officer at close range.

A physical altercation ensued, during which McKAY assaulted the officer in the upper body. Several officers quickly intervened and managed to arrest McKAY without further incident. The officer sustained minor injuries but did not require medical assistance.

McKay, a resident of Winnipeg, faces multiple charges for her alleged involvement, including Assault Peace Officer with a Weapon, Uttering Threats – Cause Death or Bodily Harm, Resist Peace Officer, and a Warrant for failing to attend court. She remains in police custody.
