Winnipeg Police Investigate Shooting Linked to Online Firearm Purchase

On the night of April 8, 2024, at approximately 10:00 p.m., the Winnipeg Police Service responded to a shooting incident in the 500 block of Mountain Avenue. North District General Patrol officers, assisted by members of K9 and Tactical Support Units, found a 20-year-old male victim in the 1000 block of McPhillips Street suffering from multiple gunshot wounds.

The victim received immediate emergency medical care from the officers, who applied a chest seal to his wounds. He was transported to a hospital in unstable condition, which was later upgraded to stable.

The Major Crimes Unit took over the investigation and discovered that the victim and suspects had arranged to meet for a firearm purchase. The meeting had been prearranged via an online firearm brokerage classified website. However, when the victim became suspicious of the suspects’ behavior, one of the suspects produced a firearm and fired multiple rounds into the victim’s vehicle as he attempted to drive away. The suspects fled the scene before police arrived.

The suspects are partially described as follows:

Suspect 1:

  • A white male in his 20s
  • Wearing a white hooded sweater

Suspect 2:

  • A male in his 30s
  • Wearing dark clothing
  • Carrying a long gun

The Winnipeg Police Service is urging anyone with information, home or business video surveillance, or dash cam video that may assist investigators in identifying the suspects to call 204-986-6219, Crime Stoppers at 204-786-TIPS (8477), or submit tips online at winnipegcrimestoppers.org.

The investigation is ongoing.
