Winnipeg Police Crack Down on Retail Theft with Successful Arrest

The Property Crime Unit and Divisional Community Support Units, in collaboration with the Retail Council of Canada and Winnipeg’s business community, continue to make strides in addressing the serious issue of shoplifting through the Retail Theft Initiative. This proactive effort aims to mitigate the threat of injury to staff and the general public, as well as the financial losses incurred by retail outlets within the city.

The initiative’s success hinges on effective collaboration between various stakeholders and a multifaceted approach that tackles the root causes of theft. The goal is to raise awareness, deter potential offenders, and promote a safe and secure shopping environment.

“We remain committed to working with our community partners and social service providers to ensure support is available to individuals facing various challenges such as food insecurity, poverty, or addiction,” said a spokesperson for the initiative.

Between February and July 2024, a male suspect attended a grocery outlet in the first 100 block of Reenders Drive, stealing merchandise totaling approximately $1,000. On August 6, 2024, the same individual targeted a grocery outlet in the 3300 block of Portage Avenue, stealing merchandise worth approximately $200.

The Major Crimes Unit, providing theft deterrence in the area, arrested the suspect with the assistance of store loss prevention officers. Further investigation revealed that the suspect was connected to nine other instances of stolen merchandise from the grocery outlet on Reenders Drive.

Michael Jeffery Britton, 43, of Winnipeg, has been charged for his alleged involvement with ten counts of Theft Under $5,000 and three counts of Failure to Attend Court. He has been detained in custody.
