On December 27, 2024, at approximately 7:45 p.m., the Winnipeg Police Service (WPS) responded to a distress call regarding an assault with a weapon in the 300 block of Keenleyside Street. Officers from the North District arrived at the scene to find a male in his 20s with serious upper body injuries outside a residence. Quick thinking and emergency medical care, including the application of two tourniquets, helped stabilize the victim who was then rushed to the hospital. After intensive treatment, his condition was upgraded from unstable to stable.
With assistance from the K9 Unit and eyewitness accounts, officers tracked down three individuals matching the suspects’ descriptions on Watt Street. Following a brief foot pursuit, police apprehended two males—one on Union Street and another on Harbison Avenue West—recovering the weapons used in the assault. However, one individual remains at large.
Investigators revealed that the incident began when the victim was leaving a social gathering at a residence. Unknown males from an upstairs suite pursued him outside, assaulting him with bear spray and a machete. The suspects fled, leaving bystanders to call the police.
Two juveniles have been charged in connection with the assault. A 14-year-old male faces charges of aggravated assault and assault with a weapon. A 16-year-old male has been charged with aggravated assault, possession of a weapon (two counts), and five counts of failing to comply with a sentence. Both suspects are currently detained in custody.
