On December 25, 2024, at approximately 4:00 p.m., the Winnipeg Police Service responded to a report of an assault with a weapon involving an erratic driver near Buchanan Boulevard and Fairlane Street.
West District General Patrol officers arrived at the scene and found a 32-year-old male victim. They learned that a 42-year-old male suspect had been driving erratically during a dispute with an adult female passenger. The female passenger exited the vehicle near the location, prompting the victim to stop and check on her well-being. The suspect then produced a baseball bat, swung it at the victim, and threatened to kill him. Fortunately, the victim was not injured.
Officers located the vehicle a short time later, identified the driver, and took him into custody. The suspect was found to be impaired by drugs or alcohol and was driving with a suspended license.
Steve Byrne, 42, of Winnipeg, is facing multiple charges, including Assault with a Weapon, Uttering Threats to Cause Death or Bodily Harm, Operation of a Conveyance While Impaired by BAC or Drug or a Combination of Both, and Driving Suspended/Disqualified. He was released on an Undertaking as mandated by the Criminal Code.
