On September 11, 2023, at approximately 4:30 p.m., the Winnipeg Police Service responded to a report of an injured adult male in the rear lane of the 600 block of Lipton Street. Upon arrival, Central District General Patrol officers located the injured male victim, who was transported to the hospital in critical condition. Unfortunately, he succumbed to his injuries.
The Homicide Unit took over the investigation and identified the victim as 56-year-old Robert Wayne Billings of Winnipeg. Family notifications have been made.
Investigators determined that the victim and the suspect were unknown to each other. The investigation continued, and on July 30, 2024, a warrant for arrest was executed. The suspect, 43-year-old Christopher Michael Gatehouse, was arrested at a residence in the 800 block of St. Paul Avenue.
Gatehouse has been charged with manslaughter and is currently detained in custody.
