On the morning of July 19, 2024, the Winnipeg Police Service responded to a report of an unknown male sleeping in a parked vehicle in the rear lane of the 300 block of Stradbrook Avenue. Upon arrival, West District General Patrol officers found the suspect, later identified as 33-year-old Rick James Walker of Winnipeg, asleep at the wheel of a 2011 Chevrolet Express van.
Officers woke Walker and arrested him without incident. A search of his person revealed a sheathed hunting knife, while a subsequent search of his duffle bag uncovered a sawed-off shotgun, 12-gauge ammunition, and multiple break-in instruments. All items were seized as evidence.
Investigations revealed that Walker had broken into the vehicle and caused extensive damage to the steering column before falling asleep at the wheel. Walker faces multiple charges, including firearm-related offences, theft of a motor vehicle, weapon-related offences, possession of break-in instruments, and breaches of probation orders. Additionally, he was found to have two warrants of arrest in his name.
Walker remains in custody as the investigation continues.
