Winnipeg mandates mask use in all city facilities and vehicles including transit

Effective Saturday, August 19, 2020, the City of Winnipeg has mandated that non-medical masks must be worn in all city-operated facilities and vehicles including Winnipeg Transit.

“As we approach the fall season and children are returning back to school, higher volumes of people are expected on Winnipeg Transit and in City of Winnipeg facilities, and with those higher volumes of people, it will be increasingly difficult to maintain physical distancing,” said Mayor Brian Bowman.

The city says that people wanting to enter facilities or use transit who do not have a mask on will be told by employees of the requirement. The city is considering providing masks for a period of two weeks at city facilities and on transit at a special meeting of council on August 31st.

Although the city is going to focus on educating people about the mask requirement Winnipeg Transit riders could face a $100 fine if they refuse to comply with the new regulation.

Enforcement measures may come into play if there is wide-spread non-compliance with the mask requirement.
