Winnipeg Man Hospitalized After Police Encounter, Independent Investigation Underway

A serious injury sustained by an adult male involving the Winnipeg Police Service (WPS) is currently under investigation by the Independent Investigation Unit of Manitoba (IIU).

The incident occurred on June 16 at approximately 8:20 p.m. in the 2000 block of Corydon Avenue. WPS officers on patrol observed a man yelling and exiting a store with merchandise. Despite orders to stop, the man continued to run, leading to a pursuit by the officers.

During the ensuing use-of-force encounter, the man hit his head on the ground, which rendered him unconscious. He was immediately transported to a local hospital, where he is currently being monitored for a brain bleed.

The WPS notified the IIU of the incident on June 17. As the man’s injury is classified as serious under IIU regulations, the unit is mandated to investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident.

The IIU is appealing to the public for assistance in the ongoing investigation. Witnesses or individuals possessing information or video footage that may aid the investigation are urged to contact the IIU toll-free at 1-844-667-6060.
