A Winnipeg man is facing a number of charges after he attempted to evade police in a stolen vehicle late Saturday night, June 10, 2023.
Police say that officers spotted the vehicle in Winnipeg’s North End around 11:45 pm and began to follow it. Once the suspect spotted the officers he fled and was seen driving erratically. Air1 was called in and followed the vehicle from above until it entered a parking lot in the 400 block of McPhillips Street.
With police in foot pursuit the suspect went into a nearby business. As the officers approached the suspect became combative and attempted to take an officer’s taser. The suspect was taken into custody.
Police seized a number of items from the suspect and the stolen vehicle including:
- Approximately 10 grams of Methamphetamine (Estimated Street Value: $500)
- Approximately 3.5 grams of Cocaine (Estimated Street Value: $350)
- Cell Phone x 2
- Approximately $275 Canadian Currency
- Knife
- Packaging Materials
The investigation uncovered that the vehicle a 2018 Hyundai Tucson had been stolen during a robbery in the 400 block of River Avenue on May 25, 2023. The plates on the SUV had also been stolen sometime between May 31 and June 3, 2023.
Dwight John Stevenson Has been charged for his alleged involvement with:
- Disarming a Peace Officer
- Resist Peace Office- Dangerous Operation of a Conveyance
- Operation of a Conveyance While Prohibited by Order Under Criminal Code
- Possession of a Weapon
- Possession of Proceeds of Property Obtained by Crime Under $5,000 x 2
- Possession of Proceeds of Property Obtained by Crime Over $5,000
- Possession of a Scheduled Substance for the Purpose of Trafficking – Methamphetamine
- Possession of a Scheduled Substance for the Purpose of Trafficking – Cocaine
- Fail to Comply with Condition of Undertaking x 4
- Warrant (Possession of Property Obtained by Crime Under $5,000, Fraud Under $5,000, Fail to Comply with Undertaking)
Stevenson was detaind in custody.
