Officers responded to a report of an assault in the 300 block of Qu’Appelle Avenue at approximately 10:30 p.m. on February 23, 2025. Upon arrival, Central District General Patrol officers, with assistance from West District General Patrol, found a male victim suffering from multiple upper body injuries.

Officers provided immediate emergency medical care, including applying two chest seals, before the victim was transported to the hospital in critical condition. The victim succumbed to his injuries.

The deceased has been identified as Steven Gordon Loonfoot, 45, a member of Garden Hill First Nation who had resided in Winnipeg for several years.

The Winnipeg Police Service’s Homicide Unit has taken over the investigation.

Shortly after the assault, a 16-year-old male was arrested in the vicinity of the crime scene. A second 16-year-old male was apprehended later that day in the first 100 block of Victory Place.

Following consultation with the Manitoba Prosecution Service, both youths have been charged with second-degree murder.
