A 33-year-old Winnipeg man has been charged in connection with a shooting that occurred at an after-hours gathering in a closed Osborne Street establishment earlier this month, Winnipeg Police Service announced.
On February 6, 2025, at approximately 4:15 a.m., West District General Patrol officers were flagged down in the 100 block of Osborne Street regarding a reported firearm discharge. Upon arrival, officers found a 29-year-old man suffering from a gunshot wound to the upper body inside a closed licensed lounge.
Officers provided immediate medical assistance, applying a chest seal before paramedics transported the victim to hospital in unstable condition. He has since been upgraded to stable.
The initial investigation by the Major Crimes Unit revealed that an argument between two groups of patrons, who were present after the establishment’s closing hours, escalated into a physical altercation. During the confrontation, a suspect produced a firearm and shot the victim.
The 48-year-old owner of the lounge, who was present during the incident, was arrested and charged for his alleged involvement with Obstruction. He was subsequently released on an Appearance Notice as mandated by the Criminal Code.
Following an extensive investigation, police identified a suspect. On February 11, the suspect was located and arrested without incident in the area of Cheriton Avenue and Rothesay Street.
Samuel Akuok Mayen, 33, of Winnipeg, has been charged with Assault and Aggravated Assault. He remains in custody.
Winnipeg Police are continuing to seek information regarding the incident. Anyone with information is urged to contact investigators in the Major Crimes Unit at 204-986-6219, or to provide information anonymously through Crime Stoppers at 204-786-8477 or online at winnipegcrimestoppers.org.
