Winnipeg Man Charged in Bear Spray Assault Involving Eight Victims

A seemingly random bear spray attack in the area of Young and Ellice has led to the arrest of a 25-year-old Winnipeg man. The incident occurred on June 24, 2024, around 5:30 p.m., when officers from the Central District responded to the assault report.

Upon arrival, the officers identified eight victims, including six adults, a toddler, and a baby who were with their mother. The victims reported that an unidentified male had discharged bear spray at them before fleeing the scene. Medical assistance was promptly requested by the officers on the scene, and statements were taken from those willing to provide them.

Following a search of the area, police spotted a male matching the suspect’s description near Sherbrook and Ellice. As they approached, the suspect motioned to his waistband and attempted to escape on foot. However, after a brief chase, he was apprehended in the 500 block of Sherbrook Street. During the arrest, police deployed a Conducted Energy Weapon (Taser), and a discarded canister of bear spray was recovered.

The suspect, identified as Tiren Dettanikkeaze of Winnipeg, has been charged with six counts of Assault with a Weapon and one count of Possession of a Weapon. He has been detained in custody pending further proceedings. The investigation is ongoing.
