A 21-year-old Winnipeg man is facing multiple charges, including assaulting a police officer, after a bizarre incident that began at a motor vehicle collision scene.
On February 2, 2025, at approximately 7:06 p.m., Central District General Patrol officers were attending to a collision at the intersection of Ellice Avenue and Colony Street. A vehicle driven by a 21-year-old man pulled up behind the police cruiser. The man exited his vehicle, allegedly holding an open alcoholic beverage, and began speaking with the officers. Police observed signs of impairment.
The man returned to his vehicle, where officers instructed him to remain. Instead, he attempted to flee, reversing his vehicle and striking an officer, driving over the officer’s foot before speeding away.
Later that evening, at approximately 8:26 p.m., police received a call from a passer-by who reported a possibly intoxicated man outside a vehicle near Pembina Highway and Bairdmore Boulevard. Officers responded and located the suspect, taking him into custody without incident.
Nicholas Sawchuk, 21, of Winnipeg has been charged with operation of a conveyance while impaired, operating a conveyance with a blood alcohol concentration over 80mg, and assault a peace officer with a weapon. He was detained in custody.
