A 27-year-old Winnipeg man was arrested early Tuesday morning after brandishing a firearm in public and pointing it at bystanders. The suspect, identified as Wayne Nathan Roullette, was apprehended by the Winnipeg Police Service (WPS) on the 800 block of Sherbrook Street at approximately 5:45 a.m.

Responding to reports of a man armed with a firearm, Central District General Patrol officers arrived on the scene within minutes. They intercepted Roullette, who was still brandishing the firearm, and took him into custody without incident. The firearm, identified as a Semi-Automatic SKS Rifle, was secured and seized by officers. A small quantity of what is believed to be methamphetamine was also found on Roullette’s person.

The arrest followed a swift response from Health Sciences Centre security and an Institutional Safety Officer, who observed Roullette brandishing the firearm outside the facility and immediately summoned police. Upon noticing the security personnel, Roullette pointed the firearm in their direction before fleeing on foot. Security personnel maintained visual contact with Roullette until police arrived.

Despite the alarming incident, no shots were fired from the weapon, and no injuries were reported.

Roullette initially refused to provide his legal name upon arrest but was later positively identified through fingerprint identification. He has been charged with several offences, including pointing a firearm, possession of a firearm knowing its possession is unauthorized, possession of a firearm, restricted/prohibited weapon or ammunition contrary to prohibition order, possession of a scheduled substance – methamphetamine, and public mischief.

Roullette has been detained in custody pending further legal proceedings.
