Email alerts also available
In an attempt to get information out to the public during an emergency the City of Winnipeg has launched a new service called WpgEmerg Alert Service. The service will provide text and email notices to everyone who has signed up if an emergency arises in the city.
Although the city will still use traditional media and social media platforms to get information to the public they say this new service will keep people up to date in an efficient manner.
“In an emergency, we will continue to release information through the media, social media, and our website,” said Felicia Wiltshire, Director, Customer Service & Communications. “This new service will also allow us to reach people quickly and directly on their mobile devices.”
According to the city, they will only use the service in an actual emergency and will never send subscribers marketing materials for any other city services.
