Winnipeg Gets $58.5 Million Boost for Affordable Housing, Creating Nearly 2,500 New Homes

Winnipeg’s housing market is set to receive a significant boost with a combined investment of $58.5 million from the Government of Canada and the City of Winnipeg. The funding, distributed through two key housing programs, is projected to create nearly 2,500 new homes and leverage over $1.6 billion in construction across the city.

The announcement on Monday, February 10, 2025, detailed the recipients of the second round of grants under the Housing Accelerator Fund Capital Grant Program. The City is allocating $25 million to 12 local housing projects, focusing on affordable housing and developments in Downtown Winnipeg. These projects are expected to generate 1,418 new housing units, with 633 designated as affordable.

In addition, 16 housing development projects will receive $33.5 million in tax increment financing (TIF) through the City’s Affordable Housing Now Program. These projects, combined with the Housing Accelerator Fund initiatives, will bring a total of 2,487 new housing units to Winnipeg, including 1,295 affordable homes.

“It’s wonderful to see the impact the Housing Accelerator Fund is having across Winnipeg,” said the Honourable Terry Duguid, Minister of Sport and PrairiesCan. “Projects like these will help young people find affordable homes and create vibrant, inclusive communities where all families, especially the next generation, can thrive and build their future.”

Mayor Scott Gillingham emphasized the economic impact of the investment. “Our $58.5 million investment is unlocking over $1.6 billion in construction, building affordable homes for families, creating jobs, and driving economic growth across Winnipeg,” he stated.

The Housing Accelerator Fund Capital Grant Program saw significant interest during its initial intake period, with 66 applications requesting approximately $160 million. This second round of funding follows an initial allocation of $25 million to 11 projects in Round One.
