Winnipeg Firefighters Respond to Three Overnight Fires

Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service (WFPS) crews were kept busy overnight responding to three separate fires, one early Monday morning and two Sunday evening.

The most serious incident occurred at 2:26 a.m. on Monday, February 10, 2025, in the 200 block of Sharp Boulevard. Firefighters arrived to find smoke and flames engulfing a one-and-a-half storey home. Crews launched an interior attack and declared the fire under control at 2:59 a.m. Two occupants had already evacuated the house, but firefighters rescued a third individual who was then transported to hospital in unstable condition. Two other occupants were also hospitalized in stable condition. Firefighters also rescued a cat and a dog from the residence. The fire is believed to be accidental, caused by a failure in a lithium-ion battery or charger. WFPS is reminding residents about the fire risks associated with charging devices and the importance of following manufacturer instructions, using the correct chargers, and charging on hard surfaces.

Earlier Sunday evening, at 7:43 p.m., crews responded to a monitored alarm at a seven-storey apartment building in the 200 block of Dufferin Avenue. A fire was located in one suite and quickly extinguished. Residents were able to shelter-in-place, and no injuries were reported. Investigators believe the fire was accidental, caused by improper disposal of smoking materials. WFPS is urging residents to be cautious with smoking materials, ensuring they are fully extinguished and disposed of properly.

The first of the three fires occurred at 5:27 p.m. Sunday in the 500 block of Machray Avenue. Firefighters found smoke in a two-and-a-half storey residence and quickly extinguished a small fire. All occupants had self-evacuated, and no injuries were reported. Preliminary findings suggest the fire was accidental, caused by a child playing with a lighter. WFPS is reminding parents and guardians to educate their children about the dangers of fire and to keep lighters and matches out of reach.
