The Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service (WFPS) responded to two structure fires in the city overnight, one on Furby Street and the other on Kanata Street.
Furby Street
At 9:39 p.m. on Wednesday, June 19, 2024, WFPS crews were dispatched to a fire in a one-and-a-half storey house in the 600 block of Furby Street. Upon arrival, crews found smoke in the house and immediately initiated an interior attack. The fire was successfully contained to the room where it originated and was declared under control by 10 p.m.
All occupants had self-evacuated prior to the arrival of crews. One individual was assessed on scene by paramedics but did not require hospitalization. No other injuries were reported. The cause of the fire is currently under investigation and damage estimates are not yet available.
Kanata Street
In the early hours of Thursday, June 20, 2024, at 3:45 a.m., WFPS crews responded to a fire in a two-storey, single-family house in the 500 block of Kanata Street. Crews arrived to find heavy smoke and flames emanating from the house. An initial interior attack was attempted, but deteriorating conditions forced crews to transition to a defensive strategy, utilizing an aerial ladder truck to douse the flames.
The WFPS drone was deployed, providing crucial imagery that helped direct crews to hotspots. Once conditions improved, crews re-entered the house to complete extinguishment of the fire, which was declared under control at 5:28 a.m.
The occupants of the house had safely self-evacuated before crews arrived, and no injuries were reported. However, three cats residing in the house are currently unaccounted for. Residents in the neighbourhood are asked to contact the Winnipeg Humane Society if they find a lost cat in the area.
The house has suffered significant smoke, fire, and water damage. The cause of the fire is under investigation and damage estimates are not yet available.
