On the morning of Thursday, April 18, 2024, the Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service (WFPS) responded to two structure fires on Nairn and Grierson avenues.
Nairn Avenue Fire
At 7:13 a.m., WFPS crews arrived at a one-and-a-half-storey house in the 300 block of Nairn Avenue, where smoke was seen coming from the structure. An interior fire attack was launched, and the flames were extinguished by 8:14 a.m.
During a search of the building, firefighters found a dog that had died in the blaze. No other injuries were reported. Preliminary observations suggest the fire was accidental, caused by a malfunctioning clothes dryer.
WFPS reminds residents to reduce the risk of dryer fires by ensuring professional installation and regular servicing of dryers, using a lint filter and cleaning it after each load, checking the venting system periodically for lint buildup or damage, ensuring the outdoor vent flap opens when the dryer is running, and never leaving a dryer running when not at home.
Grierson Avenue Fire
At 10:35 a.m., WFPS crews responded to reports of fire at a single-storey house in the 600 block of Grierson Avenue. Smoke was seen coming from the house upon arrival. The fire was quickly extinguished and declared under control at 10:58 a.m.
Residents of the home had safely self-evacuated before crews arrived on scene, and no injuries were reported. Preliminary observations suggest the cause of the fire was accidental, due to an electrical malfunction.
