The Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service (WFPS) had a busy Friday night, responding to two fires on Balgona Road and Young Street.
The first incident occurred at a vacant house on Balgona Road. WFPS crews were dispatched to the scene at 6 p.m. on Friday, May 24, following reports of a fire. Upon arrival, they found the structure engulfed in flames and smoke. The fire was successfully extinguished and declared under control by 6:40 p.m. A thorough search of the house confirmed that there were no occupants and no injuries were reported. The cause of the fire is still under investigation, and damage estimates are currently unavailable.
Later that night, at 9:03 p.m., WFPS crews were called to a commercial building in the first 100 block of Young Street. The building was ablaze with heavy flames and smoke visible upon the crews’ arrival. A defensive fire attack was launched, utilizing hose lines and an aerial ladder truck to put out the fire. The situation was declared under control at 11:33 p.m.
One person managed to self-evacuate from the building before the arrival of the crews. They were assessed by paramedics on the scene but did not require hospitalization. No other injuries were reported. As a precautionary measure, residents of nearby suites were temporarily evacuated. A Winnipeg Transit bus was provided for shelter until residents could safely return to their suites.
Due to the extensive fire, smoke, and water damage, an emergency demolition of the building was ordered. The cause of this fire is also under investigation.
