A vehicle theft in Central Park led to an arrest yesterday evening, as Winnipeg Police Service apprehended two suspects linked to a series of crimes.
At approximately 4:50 p.m., police were alerted to the theft of a motor vehicle, a rented 2014 Mazda CX-5, by an adult male and female. The 44-year-old male victim managed to track his stolen vehicle to a parking lot on the 1500 block of Regent Avenue by 8:00 p.m. He observed both suspects with the vehicle and promptly notified the police. However, the suspects fled the scene on foot before officers arrived.
The East District General Patrol responded swiftly, locating and arresting both suspects in the same parking lot without incident. Upon arrest, the male suspect was found in possession of approximately $1,300 worth of stolen property from two nearby retail stores, as well as identification documents that did not belong to him.
The male suspect, identified as Joseph Michael HOBAN, 38, of Winnipeg, has been charged with Possession of Property Obtained by Crime Over $5,000, Possession of Identification Document, and Theft Under $5,000 (two counts). He has been detained in custody.
A 29-year-old female from Winnipeg, also involved in the incident, is facing a charge of Possession of Property Obtained by Crime Over $5,000. She was released by way of an Appearance Notice, as mandated by the Criminal Code.
The stolen vehicle was recovered by the police and the stolen property was returned to its rightful owners. It has been confirmed that the suspects and the victim were not previously known to each other. The investigation is ongoing.
