Manitoba’s police watchdog agency the Independent Investigation Unit (IIU) announced on Wednesday, November 29, 2017, that a Winnipeg Police officer is facing charges.
Th IIU says that on August 7, 2017, the officer allegedly used excessive force while arresting a 12-year-old boy. The boy was not injured but the civilian director of the IIU, Zane Tessler, believed that the investigation was in the public interest.

According to the IIU, a thorough investigation was conducted and that there are reasonable and probable grounds to believe a criminal offence occurred
On November 28, 2017, a WPS officer with more than 16 years on the force was informed of the charges and issued a notice to appear in Provincial Court in January of 2018.
The identity of the officer has not been released.
