Winnipeg Checkstop nabs 20 impaired drivers since Dec. 1st

Winnipeg Police stopped 711 vehicles, conducted 508 roadside breath tests and charged 20 people for impaired driving during Checkstops during the first two weeks of December 2019.

Police say that they also issued 15 traffic tickets during their annual program.

Impaired driving continues to be the number 1 criminal cause of death in Canada that is 100% preventable.

Driving while impaired by cannabis is also a crime and one person so far this season is facing charges for it.

As of December 16, 2019, police have new powers that will allow them to deal with impaired drivers at roadside. Steeper fines and stronger penalties have been put in place by Manitoba in an effort to reduce impaired driving in the province.
