Firefighters work to put out William Avenue blaze as Thunderstorm passes overhead

Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service were called to a fire in a two-storey house on William Avenue near Gertie Street around 9:20 pm Friday night, September 20, 2019.

When crews arrived smoke could be seen coming from the upstairs windows and roof. An offensive attack was initiated from the back of the building

The building was vacant at the time of the blaze from a previous fire.

Due to an active thunderstorm in the area crews working the front of the building had to wait for lightning to subside before they could take to ladders and vent the building through previously boarded up windows.

Crews were able to get the fire under control within about 20 minutes

The cause of the fire is under investigation.

Firefighters also responded to two other fires overnight. Around 3:30am Saturday, September 21, 2019 crews were called to a blaze on Point Douglas Avenue. Two semi trailers were engulfed in flames when firefighters arrived on scene. The fire also spread to an adjacent building. The fire was brought under control by 4:45 am. No injuries were reported. An investigation into the cause is underway.

Around 4:00 am fire crews responded to two garage fires in Elmwood. Both garages in the 200 block of Bowman Avenue were quickly extinguished and are currently under investigation to determine a cause. No one was hurt in either blaze.
