On the evening of February 2, 2025, at approximately 9:02 p.m., a 50-year-old male crossing Isabel Street in his wheelchair was struck by an SUV driven by a 59-year-old man. The incident occurred near the intersection of Bannatyne Avenue, just as Central District General Patrol officers were passing by.
The collision resulted in the victim being dislodged from his wheelchair, suffering significant injuries. The driver of the SUV made no attempt to stop and fled the scene, leaving the injured man behind. Paramedics quickly arrived and transported the victim to the hospital. Though initially in unstable condition, he was later upgraded to stable.
A short distance from the scene, officers apprehended the suspect without incident. Upon arrest, it was determined that the suspect’s ability to operate a motor vehicle was impaired.
The 59-year-old driver is now facing charges, including:
- Operation of a Conveyance Causing Bodily Harm While Impaired by Alcohol or Drugs
- Operation of a Conveyance Within Two Hours of Ceasing to Operate With a Blood Alcohol Concentration of 80 mg or Over
He has been released on an Appearance Notice, as mandated by the Criminal Code.
