Two Firefighters injured, two dogs dead in Wellington Cres. blaze.

Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service (WFPS) were called too home on Wellington Cres. near Oxford Street around 9:40 am on Wednesday, January 9, 2019.

As crews arrived on scene smoke was billowing from the home. A working fire was located in the basement of the large dwelling. Firefighters began to fight the fire inside the building but were forced to pull back and fight it defensively after the conditions inside became more dangerous and the floors became compromised.

Fire crews were unable to use a ladder truck to fight the flames from above due to a narrow lane leading to the home.

Everyone inside the home was accounted for say officials. Unfortunately two dogs did not survive. Firefighters attempted to revive the animals but they were unable to resuscitate them.

Two firefighters suffered minor injuries while battling the fire and one of them was taken to hospital as a result. There were no other reported injuries.

The fire was brought under control just after 4:00 pm.

The city says that Wellington Crescent remains closed until fire crews have completed their work at the scene. Water used to fight the fire collected on the street and has now frozen. City crews will be monitoring and applying sand and de-icing materials when necessary.

The fire is under investigation.
