During the month of December, Winnipeg Police will be out on the street checking drivers throughout the city.

The Program began December 1 and runs until the end of New Years celebrations. The purpose of the Checkstop program is to enforce Impaired Driving legislation and educate the public about the dangers associated with drinking and driving.

The numbers for the first week of the program are out

Week 1 in Winnipeg  (Friday, December 1 to Thursday, December 7) results:
    • A total of 1,516 vehicles were stopped.
    • 26 road-side breath tests administered resulting in 5 warns and 2 fails.
    • 14 impaired driving-related arrests, plus 2 other arrests.
    • 38 tickets were issued.

According to police impaired driving is the number one criminal cause of death in Canada and it is 100% preventable.

The RCMP also put out numbers for outside the city for the first three days and are concerned with the high rates of impaired driving they are seeing so early in the program.

“It’s only week one of our Checkstop and we’re already seeing high numbers of intoxicated drivers behind the wheel. Be assured that our officers will be out in full force over the holidays to stop and arrest any driver that decides to drive impaired,” said Inspector Ed Moreland, Officer in Charge of Manitoba RCMP Traffic Services. “We need Manitobans to plan ahead for a safe ride home to avoid serious, and even fatal, consequences.”

Week 1 in Manitoba (December 1 to December 3) – not including Winnipeg

21 people were charged with Impaired Driving and six alcohol-related tiered suspensions were issued.
