RCMP have a 20-year-old suspect in custody after he tried to run from them in Portage la Prairie early Tuesday morning, March 5, 2019.
RCMP say that went to a local business in Portage to arrest Mateo Roulette on outstanding warrants but when they arrived Roulette took off after being told he was under arrest.
As the suspect was fleeing he dropped several items from a backpack he was carrying.
Police say that a 32-year-old female tried to help Roulette escape, She was taken into custody.
As the suspect continued to run from police he threw out a loaded gun which officers immediately recovered.
Roulette was arrested and a search of his backpack uncovered a prohibited firearm, a machete, ammunition, prescription drugs belonging to other people and multiple cell phones. Officers also found more ammunition when they search his person.
The accused now faces charges on top of the initial warrants he was wanted on including Possession of a Weapon for a Dangerous Purpose, Resist Arrest, and several Fail to Comply charges for his alleged involvement.
The female will face Obstruction as well as Possession of a Controlled Substance after officers found a plastic bag containing a white powder they believe is meth.
The investigation continues.
