Walkway funding on hold as two councillors refuse additional dollars

A $5 million river walkway along Tache in St. Boniface has hit a couple of road blocks in the way of councillors Devi Sharma and Jeff Browaty.

In a split vote (2-2) the public works committee was unable to recommend a $ 4.8 million funding increase to the already $5.2 million budget set aside to build what is being touted as an expensive “selfie” spot on the river.

The funding shortfall came to light last week as city officials said the additional funds were needed because the original budget did not include the required street construction, lighting, river bank stabilization and contingency fees.

The mayor’s Executive Policy committee will receive the funding request without a recommendation from the public works committee later this week and it is expected the additional money needed to complete the project will be approved.

Construction on the walkway is expected to begin over the winter with a completion of late 2018 if additional funding is approved.
