Accused Winnipeg bank robber denied bail in Saskatchewan

Steve Vogelsang won’t be out in the community anytime soon after a Regina Judge denied the accused bank robber bail.

Vogelsang was arrested in Medicine Hat in October after it is alleged that he committed two bank robberies in the Alberta city. Police also charged Vogelsang for three Regina bank robberies in July and October and for one bank heist in Saskatoon in July of 2017.

In December Vogelsang was granted bail by an Alberta judge so that he could get his affairs in order. He was then required to undergo a psychiatric assessment to determine if he would be considered criminally responsible.

Prior to being released, however, Vogelsang was transferred to Saskatchewan to face the charges there.

While Vogelsang was in custody he did receive an assessment from an Edmonton psychiatrist working for the Forensic Assessment Centre. According to a letter prepared by the psychiatrist, Vogelsang may have been suffering from a manic phase of bipolar disorder during the robberies in Medicine Hat on October 19 and 20, 2017.

On Tuesday, January 30, 2018, a judge in Regina denied Vogelsang bail while he awaits trial.

Vogelsang worked as a sports reporter at CKY TV (CTV) in Winnipeg for several years beginning in the early 1990’s before becoming News Director. In 2002 Vogelsang left broadcasting and became a journalism instructor at Red River College in Winnipeg. He left that job in 2011 and move to British Columbia.
