A good samaritan in Brandon was taught a lesson about criminals on Friday, August 2, 2019.
Brandon Police say the good samaritan stopped to help a female in the downtown area of the city who was having some sort of difficulty with her bicycle. The helpful citizen offered to take the woman and her bike to the woman’s home. As the obliging driver was loading the bike into the trunk of the car the female jumped behind the wheel, locked the doors and took off in the vehicle.
Investigators say the afternoon got worse for the victim after the stolen vehicle was involved in a hit and run accident in the 1200 block of Lorne Avenue East. Police say that the vehicle struck a townhouse and was being driven by a male suspect at the time.
Three hours later police were called to check on a highly intoxicated man in the downtown area. The male had a couple of bottles of liquor that had been stolen a couple of hour earlier. The male matched the description of the thief from the surveillance video in the business. The male was placed under arrest and when officers searched him they located two credit cards that belonged to the car theft victim. The victim’s wallet was inside the car when it was stolen.
The male suspect in his 40s was charged with Theft under $5,000, and Possession of Stolen Property. He was detained in custody.
Police were able to located the stolen vehicle early Saturday morning abandoned in a downtown parking lot.
On Saturday, August 3, 2019, officers investigating the stolen vehicle accessed surveillance video from businesses in the area where the vehicle was located. The video showed the 28-year-old female alleged thief driving then parking the vehicle. Police were able to identify her and place her under arrest. She was charged with Possession of stolen property then released on a promise to appear in court in September.
