Vehicle fleeing police crashes through wall of Selkirk business

UPDATED

Winnipeg Police Service is investigating after a driver fleeing from police crashed into a building on Selkirk Avenue on Saturday, April 9, 2022, just after 9:00 pm.

Police say that an officer had attempted to stop the vehicle, which had lapsed insurance, near Selkirk Avenue and McKenzie Street. The driver refused to stop and attempted to flee. Police say that the officer did not pursue the vehicle.

Witnesses tell News 4 that a vehicle was travelling eastbound on Selkirk Avenue with a K-9 unit following from a distance. The vehicle was travelling at an extremely high rate of speed when it hit a curb near Andrews Street, fishtailed then hit a second curb and flipped onto its roof before crashing through the wall of Pizzeria.

The 27-year-old male driver suffered serious injuries and was transported to hospital in critical condition. The were pronounced dead upon arrival at hospital

Police shut down traffic in both directions on Selkirk Avenue between Salter Street and McGregor Street while the investigation was underway.

WPS Traffic Division is investigating the collision. Anyone with information or who may have witnessed the collision is asked to contact investigators at (204)-986-7085.
