Vehicle Fire Spreads to House, Fire Department Issues Safety Reminder

At approximately 8:30 p.m. on Saturday, January 4, 2025, the Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service (WFPS) responded to a vehicle fire threatening a single-family, bi-level house in the 600 block of David Street. The incident marked the third fire of the day believed to be linked to a block heater.

Upon arrival, WFPS crews found the vehicle fully engulfed in flames, with the fire extending to the house and attached garage. Firefighters swiftly launched an aggressive fire attack, ultimately bringing the blaze under control by 10:04 p.m.

Fortunately, no injuries were reported. However, damage estimates are not yet available. Preliminary observations suggest that the fire was accidental and likely caused by a plugged-in block heater.

In the wake of this incident, WFPS is reminding residents to follow important safety tips to prevent such fires:

  • Inspect Cords: Check block heater and extension cords for frays, cracks, or damage before plugging in your vehicle outdoors. Replace damaged cords immediately.
  • Handle with Care: If you’ve accidentally driven away with the extension cord still plugged in, replace it and have a licensed mechanic check your block heater cord.
  • Avoid Indoor Use: Never plug in your vehicle inside an attached or detached garage, as fires can quickly spread to other structures or your home.
  • Proper Cord Use: Do not overload extension cords or use them as substitutes for permanent wiring.
  • Safe Placement: Avoid running electrical or extension cords through walls, doorways, ceilings, floors, or under rugs or mats to prevent fire hazards. Ensure cords are not covered, allowing heat to escape.
  • Avoid Water and Snow: Do not allow extension cords to run through water or snow on the ground.

Residents are urged to remain vigilant and adhere to these safety guidelines to reduce the risk of fire during the winter months.
