Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service responded to a vehicle fire near Centreport Canada Way and the Perimeter Highway late Sunday afternoon, April 30, 2023.
When firefighters arrived on the scene they saw that the fire had spread from the vehicle to nearby grass and hay bales. Winds fueled the fire and it quickly grew to an area about the size of two football fields.
WFPS called in additional crews and a specialized vehicle known as a Bison to attack the fire. Water tankers were used to shuttle water to the scene. Firefighters contained the blaze and were able to get it completely extinguished.
No injuries were reported.
WFPS noted that in the coming weeks, they expect to be fighting more grass and wildland fires as the ground dries out.
