Variants of concern continue to rise in Manitoba

179 new cases of COVID-19 were identified in the province today. Three deaths were reported due to the virus:

  • a male in his 20s from the Northern health region;
  • a male in his 60s from the Winnipeg health region; and
  • a female in her 70s from the Winnipeg health region, linked to the outbreak at Golden Links Lodge.

The five-day test positivity rate is currently 5.5 per cent provincially and 5.1 per cent in Winnipeg.

The total number of lab-confirmed cases in Manitoba is 34,969.

Today’s cases are from the following health regions:

  • two cases in the Interlake-Eastern health region;
  • 84 cases in the Northern health region;
  • nine cases in the Prairie Mountain Health region;
  • seven cases in the Southern Health–Santé Sud health region; and
  • 77 cases in the Winnipeg health region.

There are currently 1,180 active cases of COVID-19 in Manitoba with 32,840 people listed as recovered.

136 people are being treated in the hospital of which 56 are considered infectious. 35 people with the virus are in Intensive Care Units with 14 of them still considered infectious.

There are 37 additional variants of concern cases identified today, 33 are B1.1.7 with 28 from the Winnipeg Health Region, three from the Prairie Mountain Health Region, one from the Interlake-Eastern Health Region and one from Southern Health Region. Four new screened or sequenced uncategorized cases have been detected. All three are from the Winnipeg Health Region.

The total number of confirmed variants of concern cases of B.1.1.7 is 332 and B.1.351 is 20. 24 variants of concern cases have not been categorized bringing the total number of confirmed variant of concern cases to 376.

949 Manitobans have died since COVID-19 first arrived in the province.

2,474 tests were completed yesterday. Since the virus first arrived in February 2020, there have been 599,622 tests completed.

Outbreaks have been declared at Extendicare/Oakview Place personal care home and at at Boissevain School in Boissevain
