Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service responded to a fire in a vacant two-storey house on McDermot Avenue between Arlington and Tecumseh Streets at 5:45 pm on Tuesday, December 7, 2021.
Smoke and flames were coming from the structure as firefighters arrived on the scene. A defensive attack was launched. Aerial ladders were set up to battle the blaze and to protect neighbouring homes on either side of the fire.
Crews evacuated the neighbouring houses as a precaution and no injuries have been reported.
Due to the extreme cold temperatures firefighters were being rotated as they battled the fire.
The fire was declared under control at 8:29 pm.
The hose suffered significant damage due to smoke, flames and water and is expected to be a complete loss.
Fire crews are expected to be on the scene for several hours as they extinguish hotspots throughout the evening.
The City says that once roads reopen drivers should use caution while driving in the area as the water used to fight the fire has frozen. road crews are monitoring the area and applying sand an deicing agents as required.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
