Use of less lethal firearm during arrest prompts IIU investigation

An investigation is underway after a suspect was injured during a weapon call on Portage Avenue in Winnipeg on July 11, 2023.

According to the Independent Investigation Unit of Manitoba (IIU) the incident took place minutes before midnight. Officers from the Winnipeg Police Service responded to a call concerning an adult male with a weapon acting erratically outside the Shell station at 701 Portage Avenue. After seeing the male running through traffic on Portage, officers ordered the male to stop and drop the weapon, The male refused their orders. Officers used a less lethal firearm on the male and he was taken into custody. The suspect was treated for minor injuries.

The IIU was notified of the incident and began an investigation as any injury that resulted from the use of a firearm is considered a serious injury and results in a mandatory investigation.
