In a 14 to 1 vote city council passed a resolution to seek reimbursement for monies paid to the president of the United Fire Fighters of Winnipeg, Alex Forrest.
Last week Mayor Bowman claimed he found a loophole in an agreement with the firefighters union that would allow them to seek a full refund for the salary that had been paid to Forrest.
Today’s vote directs city administration to seek the refund from the union.
The city has been paying about 60% of the union president’s salary since 2014 while Forrest is on full-time leave to run the union.
Alex Forrest says that the agreement for the city to pay part of his salary still stands and that it was agreed to extend until he was no longer the president of the union. He said that if the city wants to change the agreement they can submit a proposal before the current contract expires in 2020.
