Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service say the cause of a fire in a four-storey apartment building Monday morning, April 6, 2020, on Sargent Avenue is under investigation.
Crews arrived just before 6:00 am to heavy smoke and flames coming from the structure.
Additional crews and apparatus were called in with a second alarm due to the potential of a high number of people in the building.
As firefighters searched the building they found several people inside and took them to safety. One person had to be rescued by members of a ladder crew out of a third floor window.
Emergency crews launched an offensive attack but were soon forced out of the building and switching to a defensive attack until conditions improved. The fire was declared under control at 6:47 am.
Fire officials say that two people were taken to hospital, one in critical condition the other in stable condition. Seven other people were assessed by paramedics on scene but did not need hospitalization.
Several cats were rescued from the building.
The City of Winnipeg’s Emergency Social Services was deployed to help residents of the building find alternative living arrangements as residents would not be allowed back in the building after crews completed their work.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
