Two simultaneous police pursuits keep officers busy Monday morning

Winnipeg Police were involved in two pursuits at the same time early Monday morning, February 10, 2020.

According to the Winnipeg Police Service, the first pursuit began around 12:19 am when a member of the K-9 Unit located a stolen vehicle near Selkirk and Sinclair.

When the officer attempted a traffic stop the vehicle refused to stop and sped off.

Air-1 quickly located the vehicle and tracked it to an area near the airport. The accused was taken into custody without incident say police.

The suspect was wanted on a Canada wide warrant Apprehension and suspension of Parole/Statutory release.

25-year-old Jonas Donat Sabiston was arrested and charged for his alleged involvement with Unlawfully at Large, Possession of Property Obtained by crime over $5000, Possession of property obtained by crime under $5000 and Operation of a conveyance while prohibited

He was detained in custody.

Second Pursuit

The second incident happened minutes later around 12:24 am near Donald Street and Stradbrook Avenue after police tried to contain a stolen vehicle. The vehicle took off from police and made its way south on Pembina Highway winding its way back through River Heights and up route 90 to the Polo Park area.

Air-1 began tracking the vehicle as it approached the polo park area. The fleeing suspect vehicle made its way east towards Maryland Avenue.

Police deployed a stop stick at Maryland and St. Matthews as well as several others that were successful in deflating several tires.

Officers continued to track the vehicle from the air as ground units from several districts converged on the area. The suspect vehicle reached speeds of more than 100 km/h as it wound its way towards Fort Garry.

Officers were able to contain the vehicle on Bay ‘D’ of Wildwood Park Drive but the driver rammed several police cruisers in an attempt to flee.

One officer suffered minor injuries after being pinned to a patrol unit. He was taken to hospital by paramedics, treated and released.

January Snow Cornish, a 38-year-old female from Winnipeg was arrested and charged for her alleged involvement with:

  • Assault Peace Officer causing bodily harm
  • Assault Peace Officer with a weapon (x2)
  • Possess of scheduled substance – Methamphetamine
  • Flight while pursued by a Peace Officer
  • Dangerous operation of a conveyance
  • Possess property obtained by crime over $5000
  • Possession of property obtained by crime over $5000
  • Drive suspended/disqualified (HTA)

Cornish was detained in custody.
